We first introduced you to Moises in the winter of 2013. An ambitious and enthusiastic college student, Moises had come to the U.S. as a teenager to escape the growing dangers in his hometown in Mexico. While Moises was taking classes at Cañada Community College, IIBA helped him apply for U- Visa status. This visa enabled Moises to obtain a social security number, to qualify for student loans and financial aid, and to pay resident tuition rates when he transferred from Cañada College to a four-year university.
IIBA recently caught up with Moises:
“I started my first quarter at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo this past September,” Moises shared. Following his longtime dream, he’s studying Industrial Engineering, a major that will enable him to combine his academic prowess and entrepreneurial spirit.
An active student on campus, Moises has joined a variety of academic and cultural clubs, but he’s most excited about the Engineering Externship Club. “Before I got my social security number,” Moises recalls, “I was not eligible to apply for internships. With my U Visa Status, I can now take advantage of the relationships I am building with professional engineers.”
Moises hopes those relationships, along with his engineering expertise, will form the foundation of a thriving career. “In five years, I see myself working as an industrial engineer for Tesla or Apple.” But Moises won’t stop there. He wants to use his success story to inspire children to follow their dreams. “I see myself founding a non-profit organization that assists children who are living in poverty.”
