Himawari-kai
Himawari-kai was started in Oakland in 1971 by a group of Japanese American citizens who were concerned about the plight of newcomer Japanese women in the area. Many of the women were married to non-Japanese spouses and were experiencing hardships in adjusting to the new culture and lifestyle in the United States. With a small grant from the United Way, a decision was made to ask the International Institute of the East Bay to be the sponsoring organization to provide support and assistance to immigrant Japanese women and their families in the East Bay.
